It was founded in 1930 as the Moscow Polygraphic Institute on the basis of polygraphic faculties of the Moscow and Leningrad VHUTEIN. Initially, the MPI was in charge of the Printing Association of the Supreme Economic Council of the RSFSR, then it was subordinated to the People's Commissariat for Industry of the RSFSR, and from the second half of the 1930s - OGIZ (Association of State Book and Journal Publishers) of the RSFSR. In 1949 the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR established the Ivan Fedorov scholarship for students of the MPI and UPI. At the same time, in connection with the disbandment of OGIZ, the MPI was placed under the jurisdiction of Glavpoligrafizdat of the USSR. In 1993 the IIP was transformed into the Moscow State Press Academy (MGAP). In 1997, MGAP received the status of a university. Since July 2010 MGUP is named after Ivan Fedorov [2], the first printer of Russia. Since 2011, the university has moved to a two-tier Bologna system [3]. March 21, 2016, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation decided to merge the MGUP them.
